C3- Compulsive Gambling - An Overview
3 Hours
Goal:
To define compulsive gambling behaviors, assessment tools, family of origin issues & treatment strategies.Objective:
The student will be able to describe the difference between compulsive gambling and problem gambling behaviors.The student will be able to discuss the South Oaks Gambling Screen.
The student will be able to examine the influence of family traits and behaviors in creating an effective treatment and after care plan.
The student will be able to distinguish between cognitive therapies and a 12 step approach to treatment.
C11/C11a - Compulsive Spending/Debting Recovery
17 Hours / 3 Hours
Goal:
To instruct professional on how to identify, verify and treat this addictive disorder.To educate professionals about treatment strategies and how to incorporate these processes into any treatment setting.
Objective:
Participants will be able to define Compulsive Spending/Debting.Participants will be able to explain the effect of social and family of origin relationship to money and debting/spending.
Participants will be able to identify the importance and impact of these messages/beliefs.
Participants will be able to recite cycle of addiction and discuss effective treatment techniques, and various proven financial recovery strategies.
C11 is a 17 hour course
C11a is a 3 hour shorter version of the same course
C12-Compulsive Gambling & the Family
3 Hours
Goal:
The overall goal of this course is to discuss a systems approach as it relates to the multiple effects of Compulsive Gambling on all family members.To cover denial, delusion and enabling as it relates to the family.
To address intervention and treatment approaches best suited for the spouse and the children.
Objective:
Trace family of origin causes to present day pathological gambling behavior.Identify the cycle of addiction in the families responses to the gamblers behavior.
Construct a plan to help family members overcome their denial.
Write an effective treatment plan for the family.
C13- Compulsive Gambling & the Adolescent
3 Hours
Goal:
To focus on statistical information and case studies of adolescents who demonstrate problems with pathological gambling.To address family of origin issues, abandonment, unresolved grief and abuse that may act as a catalyst for adolescents to succumb to peer pressure and use gambling as a way to deal with their feelings.
Objective:
List 4 possible causes that lead to adolescent gambling behavior.State 3 treatment strategies.
Define 2 family of origin issues that may block the adolescents recovery.
C33- Compulsive Gambling
60 Hour Certification Course
Goal:
The goal of this course is to elevate the counselor’s knowledge level to qualify them for Certification. The Certification is by Contemporary Teaching. This comprehensive course combines Gambling an Overview, Gambling and the Family, Special Populations, Adolescents, Ethics and Treatment Issues, Compulsive Spending and adds an additional 18 hours of study which goes into more depth about treatment strategies, diagnosis, and aftercare planning.Objective:
Participants will be able to discuss the DSM IV diagnostic criteria for Pathological Gambling, the SOGS & MAGS gambling screens. Participants will also be able to discuss treatment strategies like REBT, Voice Dialogue, Energy Psychology and Grief Work and how they apply to working with the gambler and their family.
C14-Compulsive Gambling & Special Populations
3 Hours
Goal:
The goal of this course is to address the specific concerns of Caucasians, African Americans, Hispanic, Native Americans and Prison Populations who suffer from the effects of pathological gambling.Objective:
Explain 2 communication styles that have worked in developing rapport with these populations.Differentiate special needs of the above mentioned groups.
Define specific treatment strategies for these populations.
C15-Compulsive Gambling - Ethics & Treatment Techniques
7 Hours
Goal:
The goal of this course is to identify ethical concerns and treatment strategies for treating pathological gamblers.Objective:
Differentiate treatment needs and ethical concerns between pathological gambling and other addictive disorders.Discuss the major ethical differences revolving around financial responsibility, debt repayment, and counselors sensitivity to these issues.
Discuss the special treatment needs of the gambler like leisure time activities & repayment of debt will be of major focus.
Explain how techniques like REBT, Grief Recovery & the use of imagery are beneficial treatment strategies.
C33a- Compulsive Gambling Assessment & Treatment
18 Hours
Goal:
The goal of this 18-hour course is to inform participants about treatment planning, client screening, assessment, diagnosis and diagnostic tools as well as specialized treatment indicators for gambling.Objective:
Participants will be able to discuss the DSM-IV criteria to diagnosis pathological gambling, describe the SOGS assessment tool, 4 grief work strategies and the application of REBT in challenging and changing the gamblers core beliefs.
